What Is Zofran?
Zofran (Odansetron Hydrochloride) is a drug used to treat and prevent nausea and vomiting caused by radiation therapy and chemotherapy treatments for cancer .
Zofran was never approved for pregnant women, but many women received this medication as an off-label prescription to relieve the symptoms of morning sickness.
The manufacture, GlaxoSmithKline, has been accused of improperly marketing Zofran to doctors for relief of morning sickness in pregnant women. It is not legal to the market any drugs for off-lable use.
It has been found that pregnant women who were prescribed Zofran had a 50% greater risk of giving birth to a child with a cleft lip birth defect. It has also been shown that the risk of a congenital heart defect in infants doubles with the use of Zofran.
Zofran has been shown to cause these birth defects:
- Stillbirth
- Spontaneous Abortion
- Low Fetal Birth Rate
- Kidney Malfunction
